Guide & tips to driving in Canada

A handy guide to driving in Canada.

Q: What side of the road should I drive on?

A: Canadians drive on the right hand side and overtake on the left.

Q: What is the speed limit?

Speed limits range from 30km/h to 100/km/h on multi-lane highways but it’s usually best to check as it can vary from place to place.

Q: Who has right of way?

Always give way to pedestrians on crossings, to other vehicles already

at intersections and when making lefthand turns. When approaching a four-way stop, always give priority to whichever vehicle/s were there first.

Q: What is the drink-drive limit?

The legal blood-alcohol limit in Canada is 0.8% so it’s generally safer not to drink anything at all if you’re driving.

Q: What does a flashing green light at traffic lights indicate?

A: This means you have right of way to make a right turn.

Q: What language are road signs written in?

A: Road signs are usually in English and French except in Montreal where French has been replaced with pictograms – making life a lot easier for tourists.
